  • We Have Subcommittees!

    * Programming
    * Advocacy/Mentorship
    * Fundraising
    * Recruitment/Outreach
    To sign up, please contact our mighty chairmujer, Lucila. =)
  • Juanita Díaz-Cotto Visit
    As our first event of the year, MALCS will be co-sponsoring a campus-wide event featuring Juanita Díaz-Cotto. She will be giving a talk about her new book, “Chicana Lives and Criminal Justice: Voices from El Barrio”, on Wednesday, October 23, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. in the Golden Eagle Ballroom.

ALSO, we are in the works of scheduling a more intimate plática with
Juanita Díaz-Cotto during the week of her lecture. This event will be
specifically for those who belong to organizations focusing on women, genders,
and sexualities; it will be a discussion on women of color generally and lesbian
women of color specifically. It's going to be potluck, so bring a tasty sumthin'
sumthin' as well as your appetite for good eats and great dialogue.

  • Graduate School Workshop
    Save the date: Monday, October 30th, 2006 at 6:15 p.m. In the IHC (King Hall D4051)

* Lucila will discuss Financial Aid

* Dr. Espinoza will present on Non-traditional programs (e.g. Women's Studies, Chicana/o Studies, creating Masters Programs)
* Margarita and Ninón will share their personal experiences as graduate students
We are going to need help advertising; more details to follow!
MALCS Symposium
A full day of programming and empowerment awaits us all!
This year MALCS will be putting together the 1st Chicana/Latina/Native American Women's Symposium at CSULA. The Symposium will include:
~ Writing Workshops
~ Scholarship Information
~ Women's Health
~ Being a Mujer in College
~ And other issues relevant to us and our communities!
*The tentative date for this gran evento is February 24th, 2007 (during the 8th week of the Winter Quarter). Our target number of participants for now is 30 mujeres.
**We are still in the process of compiling and utilizing all of our funding sources, though we will most likely have to fundraise some ourselves. (Some potential ideas included selling pan dulce y chocolate when the nights start getting colder and folks are hungrier coming out of class.)
*** There is still much to discuss about the planning of the Symposium! This will be a hot topic for our next meeting, again at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 14th !
More Ideas to Pursue: Fundraising for Las Mujeres de Juárez
Profa. Espinoza passed out literature and shared some information about projects currently going on that are bringing light to the femicide in Juárez. More specifically, we will be inviting Victoria Aguilera to show the film “On the Edge” which deals with the continued femicide. We will also do an art supply drive in exchange for her coming to present at our campus. More to come on this as well!
“Word on the Street”
The following announcements were shared with the group:
* Cafe Para La Vida Digna ~ information was shared about this project that works to sell the coffee produced by Zapatista growers at a rate better than that of fair trade. To learn more, visit the website at http://www.cafeparalavidadigna.com/
* “No Human Being is Illegal” Day Laborer/Household Worker Soccer Cup ~ the Institute of Popular Education of Southern California (IDEPSCA) is seeking support for its annual soccer cup. They are trying to raise $2000.00 for the women's soccer team; anyone able to contribute is asked to make the check payable to IDEPSCA and mail it to 1565 W. 14th Street; Los Angeles, California; 90015.
