[Minutos] 2nd Meeting of Winter 2007!

Minutos from MALCS Meeting #2
January 20, 2007
Antigua Cultural Coffee House

Mujeres Presentes: Lucila, Profa. D, Yvonne, Connie, Robin, Ninon, Michaela

I. Organization Status
a. There will be a mandatory meeting on 2/13 at 3 p.m. in the Center for Student
Development.
b. This is the earliest date that we can be formally recognized as a campus org.
c. Who can attend? (Possibly Adilia and/or Margarita?)

II. Meetings
a. After taking an informal poll of mujeres’ availability, we have decided to keep the meeting dates for Saturday mornings during the Winter Quarter.
b. A possible location for future meetings may be the East L.A. library à they have nice meeting spaces available, and we may even do a screening there in the future.

III. Programming
a. On the Edge Screening
i. Lucila emailed Victoria and is waiting for a response; she will try calling her to make contact.
ii. The tentative date for the screening would be during either Week 6 or Week 7.

b. Femicidio en Guatemala
i. Date: February 28th (Wednesday) at 4:30 p.m.
ii. Possible Locations….
1. Cross Cultural Centers à there will be another event in the bookstore sponsored by the CCC later that night, though, so this location is more an option than a first choice…
2. Golden Eagle Ballroom à we cannot secure the space until 13.2 à maybe other groups could do it for us? (We will be contacting either MEChA or the Latin American Studies Society to see if they can help/hop on board!)
iii. Advertisement
1. Connie will be creating the flyer.
2. Mike (Soldatenko) may have images that can be used.
iv. Honorarium… (pending)
1. Christy had originally said that the Women’s Resource Center could provide $100 towards the Symposium
2. Perhaps that money could be used as the honorarium??

c. CA Latinas for Reproductive Justice
i. Lucila and Dionne met with Gabriela Valle and Rocío Córdoba on 1/17
ii. A little more about them…
1. This is a brand new organization that seeks to reframe issues of reproductive rights within a social justice framework --> also takes into account how the state regulates women’s bodies, cultural constructs --> how can we as women make choices with full support and necessary knowledge?
2. “Reproductive Justice” --> a woman has a right to decide whether to have kids or not, with access to choices, and not have the state regulate her choice.
iii. Date: March 3, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
1. They will hold a workshop on campus to introduce the idea of reproductive justice -->this is like an introductory meeting where both men and women are welcome.
2. Also, they’ll pay the cost for women’s travel expenses to CSULA that day.
3. The ultimate goal is to have a second “training” where they take interested folks to Sacramento and get them involved on the policy side.
iv. Location: Roybal Center (pending)
v. Advertising/Ways We Can Help
1. They are asking for our help in securing the space.
2. We can also help out with outreach on campus -->they’ll provide us with a flyer.

IV. Announcements (and, mainly, discussion on Programming Ideas for Spring)
a. May 8th ~ Panel on Women Immigrant Workers
i. Profa. D. is working on putting this together.
ii. Some things to consider: space? Names of participants? Title?
iii. The goal is to have a combination of the academic perspective with, most importantly, the voices of workers themselves.

b. May 15th ~ CSGS Student Research Conference
i. Would any mujeres be interested in acting as presenters or helping with registration?
ii. Planning meeting on Tuesday, January 23rd at 3 p.m. in the CSGS.

c. More to Mark on Your Calendars!
i. April 13th ~ PSWSA Conference on campus (organized by Profa. Hernández)
1. MALCS should do a presentation on “Defining New Role”
2. We will talk more about what we can do there; this is a great space to utilize for those mujeres who are starting to do research and need/want opportunities to present!
ii. April 19th ~ Take Back the Night event

d. What would we like to see as programming possibilities in the Spring?
i. MALCS networking with mujeres from other campuses (UCLA? Cal?)
ii. Roundtable Discussions (pláticas)
iii. A Tuesday 3:15-4:15 event?

e. February 17th ~ Eagle Fest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
i. This is the campus Open House event that aims to recruit students to the CSULA campus.
ii. We had a good discussion on whether or not this would be a worthwhile event to attend.
1. We decided that it was a good opportunity for visibility not just with potential students, but also with other orgs. on campus.
2. Volunteers to staff table? (2 hour shifts)

f. MALCS de CSULA binder!
i. We have decided to start a scrapbook/binder that will hold pictures from various events as well as member bios.
ii. The Bios can take any form that you like à just as long as it fits on a standard 8 ½ x11 sheet of paper.
1. You don’t have to put all your personal chismes on your page: just what you are comfortable sharing, and so that others reading it will get an idea of who you are and why you are in MALCS.
iii. Michaela will compile the Bios and pictures into an “album” by Eagle Fest so that we can use it as a recruiting tool.
iv. Tentative deadline for submitting Member Bios: at our next meeting!

g. MALCS Account
i. We are running very low on funds in our account…!
ii. If everyone can donate $5 to maintain the account, that would be a great help.

h. Summer Possibility: 2 weeks in Cuernavaca!!
i. Profa. D. is looking into a program that has been done at other Southland campuses which takes students to an institute in México that uses the Freirean method to teach Mexican issues (content-based instruction).
ii. The cost of attending would be around $2000, but la Profa. is looking into ways to get that partially subsidized through campus.

i. Margarita will do a workshop on Popular Education for Adults with the MALCS mujeres !

j. Hasta la próxima: February 3rd in the IHC at 10 a.m. !
